Penetrating Shortwave Radiation
نویسنده
چکیده
Few of the Pelecaniformes are globally threatened, although some island and inland populations of pelecaniform birds have become extinct in the face of habitat loss and contamination. In some species (e.g., double-crested cormorant, white pelican), numbers are increasing with near-exponential growth, while in others (e.g., Dalmatian pelican) population abundance is rapidly decreasing. Island species and populations have been especially hardhit by the introduction of terrestrial predators such as cats, rats, and pigs; loss of traditional breeding habitat has played a greater role in aquatic and inland-nesting species. Some islands such as Christmas Island (Indian Ocean) and Ascension Island (Atlantic Ocean) are breeding grounds for several pelecaniform species, and their recent protected status has promised a much better future than might have been possible only a few years earlier.

Biological effects and mechanisms of shortwave radiation: a review
With the increasing knowledge of shortwave radiation, it is widely used in wireless communications, radar observations, industrial manufacturing, and medical treatments. Despite of the benefits from shortwave, these wide applications expose humans to the risk of shortwave electromagnetic radiation, which is alleged to cause potential damage to biological systems. This review focused on the expo...
متن کاملValidation of the RRTM Shortwave Radiation Model and Comparison to GCM Shortwave Models
An important step toward improving radiative transfer codes in general circulation models (GCMs) is to thoroughly evaluate them either by comparison to measurements directly or by comparing them to other data-validated radiation models. The Rapid Radiative Transfer Model (RRTM) shortwave (SW) radiation model accurately reproduces direct beam fluxes from the Line-by-Line Radiative Transfer Model...
متن کاملInteractive comment on “ ENSO surface shortwave radiation forcing over the tropical Pacific
The paper "ENSO surface shortwave radiation forcing over the tropical Pacific" by Pavlakis et al adds the shortwave component to their earlier study, published in this journal, which examined ENSO surface longwave radiation forcing. The paper is fine, but the results basically corroborate previously published work regarding the evolution of ENSO induced changes in atmospheric circulation, outgo...
متن کاملObserved Southern Ocean Cloud Properties and Shortwave Reflection. Part I: Calculation of SW Flux from Observed Cloud Properties*
The sensitivity of the reflection of shortwave radiation over the Southern Ocean to the cloud properties there is estimated using observations from a suite of passive and active satellite instruments in combination with radiative transfer modeling. A composite cloud property observational data description is constructed that consistently incorporates mean cloud liquid water content, ice water c...
متن کاملEstimation of Net Radiation Using Satellite Based Data Inputs
Daily net surface radiation fluxes are estimated for Indian land mass at spatial grid intervals of 0.1 degree. Two approaches are employed to obtain daily net radiation for four sample days viz., November 19, 2013, December 16, 2013, January 8, 2014 and March 20, 2014. Both the approaches compute net shortwave and net longwave fluxes, separately and sum them up to obtain net radiation. The firs...
